This study examines the association between football (soccer) game outcomes and attitudes toward economic sustainability, drawing from social identity theory and construal level theory. The empirical analysis uses data from a survey of UEFA EURO 2024 ticket holders (n=13,313). Regression results show that respondents score significantly lower on economic sustainability as well as ecological and social sustainability measures when the game outcome of the national team of their country of residence was a defeat, draw, or win compared to being indifferent (i.e., attending a game without the country’s national team playing). These findings suggest that fans are temporarily less receptive to sustainability when attending a game of their national team, regardless of the game’s outcome. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of sport event externalities, the stability of preferences, and the ways in which national identity and psychological distance shape the relationship between game outcomes and sustainability attitudes.
