Alltagsnahe Kontexte eröffnen vielfältige Möglichkeiten für den Mathematikunterricht. Im aktuellen Heft von mathematik lehren (Heft 258) wird dies am Beispiel des Kontext "Fahrrad" aufgezeigt.

Unter den praxisorientierten Beiträgen für die Sekundarstufen findet sich auch ein Beitrag von Patrick Bulthaup und Alexander Salle zum Einsatz von Blütenaufgaben im Mathematikunterricht. Dabei wird anhand von Überprüfungen der Verkehrssicherheit beim Fahrrad eine Möglichkeit aufgezeigt, den Umgang mit Daten und Diagrammen im Unterricht zu üben. Bewerbungen für das Fiskaljahr 2027 (endet am 31. März 2028) müssen spätestens am 31. Oktober 2026 beim Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD) eingereicht werden.

Wer kann sich bewerben?

Das Programm richtet sich an:

fortgeschrittene Studierende in Masterstudiengängen, die eine Promotion anstreben,
Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden, sofern die formelle Annahme als Doktorandin oder Doktorand nachgewiesen werden kann,
Postdoktorandinnen und Postdoktoranden, deren Promotion am 1. April des Fiskaljahres, in dem das Stipendium angetreten wird, höchstens sechs Jahre zurückliegt.

Interested in a research stay in Japan? The JSPS Summer Program gives early-career researchers the opportunity to conduct research in Japan from June 14 to August 24, 2027.

Applications for Fiscal Year 2027 (ending on March 31, 2028) must be submitted to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) by October 31, 2026.

Who can apply?

The program is open to:

advanced graduate students enrolled in master’s programs who intend to pursue a PhD,
doctoral candidates who can provide proof of formal admission to a doctoral program,
postdoctoral researchers whose PhD was awarded no more than six years before April 1 of the fiscal year in which the scholarship begins.

Neue Impulse für die genomische und postgenomische Forschung!

Die Zusammenarbeit der Core Facility Omics, die im August 2026 gegründet wurde, nimmt Fahrt auf.

Am 19. Oktober 2026 fand die konstituierende Sitzung des Scientific Boards unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Martin Egelhaaf statt.Dieses Board wird zukünftig die Core Facility wissenschaftlich steuern und die forschungsstrategische Entwicklung vorantreiben.

Das Board hat Prof. Dr. Olaf Kruse einstimming zum Sprecher und Prof. Dr. med. Björn Spittau zum stellvertretenden Sprecher gewählt.

Die fakultätsübergreifende Zusammensetzung des Boards spiegelt die Breite der genomischen und postgenomischen Forschung wider.

Asimamaw Belete at the 2026 SkiLMeeT Conference in Brussels

Asimamaw Belete participated in the 2026 SkiLMeeT Conference: Workers, Firms, and Skills in the Digital and Green Transition, which took place in Brussels, Belgium, from October 22 to 23, 2026, at the Representation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia to the European Union.
The conference brought together researchers to discuss the effects of the digital and green transition on workers, firms, and skills, with a particular focus on skill gaps, labour-market policies, and education. During the conference, Asimamaw Belete presented his joint research with Anna Zaharieva on The Geography of Job Search, Social Networks and Match Quality.

Asimamaw Belete nahm an der 2026 SkiLMeeT Conference: Workers, Firms, and Skills in the Digital and Green Transition teil, die vom 22. bis 23. Oktober 2026 in der Vertretung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen bei der Europäischen Union in Brüssel, Belgien, stattfand.
Die Konferenz brachte Forschende zusammen, um die Auswirkungen des digitalen und grünen Wandels auf Beschäftigte, Unternehmen und Qualifikationen zu diskutieren. Im Mittelpunkt standen insbesondere Qualifikationslücken, arbeitsmarktpolitische Maßnahmen und Bildung. Im Rahmen der Konferenz präsentierte Asimamaw Belete seine gemeinsame Forschungsarbeit mit Anna Zaharieva zum Thema The Geography of Job Search, Social Networks and Match Quality.

Retreat of the Medical Assistance Systems Research Group

The Medical Assistance Systems Working Group met in Bielefeld from October 14, 2026, to October 16, 2026, for its retreat.
The retreat focused on two main topics: a review of the past year and the scientific goals for 2027.

In the first part, the group reflected together on the year 2026. We discussed which projects had made good progress, where difficulties arose, and what lessons we can take away for our collaboration and future challenges. The open discussion highlighted where we stand as a group and where our strengths lie.

In the second part, we set the scientific goals for 2027. This involved identifying the topics we want to pursue in the coming year and considering how our individual projects can benefit from synergies.

In addition to our work, we also made time for socializing. On the first evening, we went bowling together, and throughout the entire meeting, there was plenty of delicious food and, of course, wonderful coffee!

“Don’t break the pill, crush it!”: When robots adapt their explanations to our understanding

Our article “Leveraging Cognitive States for Adaptive Scaffolding of Understanding in Explanatory Tasks in HRI” has now been published in ACM Transactions on Human-Robot Interaction (Vol. 15, Issue 5). How can a robot recognise whether its counterpart has understood an explanation, and respond accordingly?

André Groß, Bjarne Thomzik, Britta Wrede and Birte Richter looked into this question in a user study. The NAO robot guided the participants in preparing medication for fictional patients on a touchscreen. To this end, the SHIFT model calculated the participants’ cognitive state in real time based on eye movements, task performance and the interaction history to date. Depending on the state, it selected appropriate verbal strategies, such as targeted negations (“Don’t break the pill; crush it instead”) or brief hesitations. Compared with pure affirmations, the adaptive explanations took slightly longer to process but were associated with around 23 per cent fewer errors. The results also show that strategies such as negations should be used selectively. Their effectiveness depends on the person’s state and the complexity of the task.

Klausurtagung der AG Medizinische Assistenzsysteme

Die AG Medizinische Assistenzsysteme hat sich vom 14.10.26 bis 16.10.26 in Bielefeld zu ihrer Klausurtagung getroffen.
Die Tagung hatte zwei inhaltliche Schwerpunkte: den Rückblick auf das vergangene Jahr und die wissenschaftlichen Ziele für 2027.

Im ersten Teil hat die Gruppe das Jahr 2026 gemeinsam reflektiert. Wir haben besprochen, welche Projekte gut vorangekommen sind, wo es Schwierigkeiten gab und was wir daraus für die Zusammenarbeit und zukünftige Herausforderungen mitnehmen. Der offene Austausch hat gezeigt, wo wir als Gruppe stehen und wo unsere Stärken liegen.

Im zweiten Teil haben wir die wissenschaftlichen Ziele für 2027 festgelegt. Dabei ging es um die Themen, die wir im kommenden Jahr verfolgen wollen und um die Frage, wie die einzelnen Arbeiten von Synergien profitieren können.

Neben der Arbeit kam auch das Socializing nicht zu kurz. Am ersten Abend sind wir gemeinsam kegeln gegangen, und über die gesamte Tagung hinweg gab es viel leckeres Essen und natürlich köstlichen Kaffee!

„Nicht zerteilen, sondern zerdrücken!“: Wenn Roboter ihre Erklärungen an unser Verständnis anpassen

Unser Artikel „Leveraging Cognitive States for Adaptive Scaffolding of Understanding in Explanatory Tasks in HRI“ ist jetzt in ACM Transactions on Human-Robot Interaction (Vol. 15, Issue 5) erschienen.

Wie kann ein Roboter erkennen, ob sein Gegenüber eine Erklärung verstanden hat, und darauf reagieren? Dieser Frage sind André Groß, Bjarne Thomzik, Britta Wrede und Birte Richter in einer Nutzerstudie nachgegangen.
Der Roboter NAO leitete die Teilnehmenden dabei an, auf einem Touchscreen Medikamente für fiktive Patient*innen vorzubereiten. Das Modell SHIFT schätzte dafür in Echtzeit den kognitiven Zustand der Teilnehmenden aus Blickverhalten, Aufgabenleistung und bisherigem Interaktionsverlauf. Je nach Zustand wählte es passende sprachliche Strategien, etwa gezielte Negationen („Zerteile die Tablette nicht, sondern zerdrücke sie“) oder kurze Häsitationen.

Verglichen mit reinen Affirmationen kosteten die adaptiven Erklärungen etwas mehr Verarbeitungszeit, gingen aber mit rund 23 % weniger Fehlern einher. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auch, dass Strategien wie Negationen gezielt eingesetzt werden sollten. Ihr Nutzen hängt vom Zustand der Person und von der Komplexität der Aufgabe ab.

A Short Report of Research Stay at the CRC 1646 by Kristina Kobrock (University of Osnabrück)

From April 1 to July 31, 2026, I had the pleasure of working as a guest researcher at the on Linguistic Creativity in Communication in project B02 on “Computational linguistic creativity in reference games between interactive dialogue agents”. I recently completed my PhD in Cognitive Science, during which I used reference games to study conceptual abstraction through interactive experiments and computational models. My research thus aligns very well with the topics studied and the methods used in B02. It was exciting to learn more about the group’s past and current research and discuss future collaborative projects. My personal goals for this research visit were to start new collaborations, gain new project ideas for my current PostDoc phase, and to extend my professional network within the Computational Linguistics community. These goals were achieved in a very welcoming and stimulating environment within the CRC and the two research groups of Sina Zarrieß and Hendrik Buschmeier on Computational and Digital Linguistics.

The four months of my research visit went by very quickly. My weeks were structured by my teaching obligations at my home university in Osnabrück, where I work as a PostDoc in the Psycho-/Neurolinguistics group at the Institute of Cognitive Science, and commuting to Bielefeld for discussions of our collaborative research with Sina Zarrieß and other colleagues. Each day I spent in Bielefeld, I felt at home on campus, in my office, and having lunch at the mensa with the wonderful colleagues in the Computational and Digital Linguistics groups. There were also numerous highlights during my visit: In April, B02 organized a workshop on “Computational Modeling of Creativity & Interactive Reference Games” with invited speakers from the international Computational Linguistics community. Results from the workshop’s brainstorming session will form the basis of a collaborative research project in which Sina Zarrieß and I will work with Ece Takmaz (Utrecht University) and Tessa Verhoef (Leiden University). Our goal is to develop interactive language models trained on human-scale data and use them to study aspects of linguistic creativity that arise from interactive and communicative pressures, goals, and intentions.

In May, I attended the SAIL project’s closing conference at CITEC featuring very interesting talks and posters around the topic of sustainable AI. I especially enjoyed the keynote talks by Katharina Eggensperger on tabular machine learning and by Mira Merzini on the role (and the risks!) of using LLMs in software development. I also joined colloquium sessions by the CRC and the Linguistics department and presented my own research on “The role of pragmatic and communicative factors in conceptual abstraction” in the Linguistics colloquium organized by Anke Himmelreich and Oliver Bott. I genuinely enjoyed the discussions with researchers from the Linguistics department about conceptual pacts, hierarchically organized concepts in different languages, and how the AI agents I trained conceptualize their world, among other topics. I received great feedback and many ideas for new experiments in the Q&A after my talk!

My conclusion is very positive: I had the pleasure of supporting an ongoing project of B02 on the communicative efficiency of LLMs in visually uncommon reference games, joined another ongoing project led by on an LLM-based analysis of the Alternative Use Task creativity test, and developed a project on LLM creativity with and . I was involved in two conference submissions, got new inspiration for future research projects, and discussed mentoring and career-related topics with Sina Zarrieß and Hendrik Buschmeier. Now I am looking forward to collaborating more on and finalizing the exciting projects that we’ve started together! Thank you, everyone, for welcoming me in Bielefeld and making this such a great and rewarding experience!

AXIS project co-led by Guillermo Restrepo receives three-year funding from Schmidt Sciences' HAVI

The project (Al-)Chemical Space In Silico (AXIS), led by Dr. Guillermo Restrepo (ISoS, Bielefeld University) and Dr. Sarah Lang (Max Planck Institute for the History of Science), has received funding of $400,000 over three years from Schmidt Sciences. Selected from more than 500 applications from 42 countries, AXIS is one of 19 projects chosen for this year’s awards from Schmidt Sciences' Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI). AXIS will use AI to rebuild and translate historical alchemical recipe collections. Selected particularly significant recipes will be tested in the laboratory.

The project aims to shed new light on the history of chemistry before 1800 and make its tools and data openly available for future research.

Zugriff auf die von der Techfak betriebenen Sprachmodelle nun auch für Studierende geöffnet!

Im Juni haben wir zwei von der Technischen Fakultät betriebene Sprachmodelle in BIKI integriert, seit dem konnten Mitarbeitende auf Qwen 3.6 und Gemma 4 zugreifen und diese leistungsfähigen, offenen Modelle nutzen. Die Performance hat sich dabei als sehr hoch bewiesen, die beiden Sprachmodelle dürften die am schnellsten antwortenden Modelle in BIKI sein. Um die Leistungsfähigkeit des Systems nicht gleich zu sehr auszureizen hatten wir in Abstimmung mit der Techfak dne Zugriff auf Mitarbeitende beschränkt.

Nachdem das System seine Leistungsfähigkeit über Monate gezeigt hat können nun aber auch Studierende auf diese Modelle zugreifen! Sie sind in der Modellauswahl in BIKI ganz am Ende der Liste zu finden, in unserem Modellkatalog finden sich weitere Beschreibungen.

The paper TU-Games: Revisiting Fundamental Concepts by Papatya Duman and Walter Trockel has been accepted for publication in Homo Oeconomicus.
The paper revisits fundamental concepts of cooperative games with transferable utility (TU-games), including coalitions, efficiency, and duality. It introduces a broader framework based on aspiration rather than imputations, proposes a refined notion of dual games, and characterizes the cohesive hull of a game using linear programming duality.

Das Paper TU-Games: Revisiting Fundamental Concepts von Papatya Duman und Walter Trockel wurde zur Veröffentlichung in Homo Oeconomicus angenommen.
Das Paper untersucht grundlegende Konzepte kooperativer Spiele mit übertragbarem Nutzen (TU-Games), darunter Koalitionen, Effizienz und Dualität, erneut. Es entwickelt einen allgemeineren Ansatz, der auf Aspirationen statt auf Imputationen basiert, führt einen verfeinerten Begriff dualer Spiele ein und charakterisiert die kohäsive Hülle eines Spiels mithilfe der Dualität der linearen Programmierung.

RTG 2951 co-hosts dialogue between researchers and practitioners on migration brokerage

The Research Training Group “Cross-Border Labour Markets” (RTG 2951, Bielefeld University and University of Duisburg Essen) and the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute Freiburg invite to the upcoming online event "Migration Brokerage in a Changing World: Bringing Practice and Research into Dialogue". At the event, scholars and practitioners will share their experiences and expertise on migration brokerage. While brokerage is contested in some contexts, this event will discuss why it remains a necessary process in (cross-border) mobility. The event takes place with the active participation of RTG 2951 Postdoctoral Researcher Sandhya A.S.

The event consists of two parts:

Part 1: Practitioners on brokerage in Asia and Europe (9:00-10:00 CET)

The first session will feature invited practitioners, who are activists, representatives of civil society organizations, trade unions, and migrant support organizations. Participants will reflect on the changing dynamics of migration governance in their areas of work, their experiences with regulating, monitoring, or collaborating with brokers, as well as the opportunities, risks, and unintended consequences associated with brokerage.

The speakers will engage in a moderated dialogue exploring brokerage as a social, economic, and political institution. Particular attention will be paid to competing interpretations of brokerage: as a mechanism of exploitation, as an infrastructure of mobility, as a response to gaps in migration governance, and as a potentially indispensable component of contemporary migration systems.

RTG 2951 Doctoral Researchers Discuss Their Projects with Gracia Liu-Farrer (Waseda University)

On Tuesday, October 20, RTG 2951 welcomed sociologist and cross-border labour market expert Gracia Liu-Farrer for a workshop with its doctoral researchers.

During the workshop, doctoral researchers presented their ongoing research projects and received valuable feedback from Gracia Liu-Farrer. The exchange provided an opportunity to discuss their research, gain new perspectives, and benefit from her expertise.

Gracia Liu-Farrer is currently a fellow at the College for Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Duisburg-Essen. She is also affiliated with Waseda University.

The workshop was a fruitful and inspiring exchange, and we are grateful to Gracia Liu-Farrer for sharing her expertise and engaging so thoughtfully with the doctoral researchers and their projects.

Am 26. Oktober 2026 hält Dr. Laura Haddad von der Universität Göttingen einen Vortrag zum Thema „Modische Inszenierungen und mediatisierte Modellpraktiken bei Hijabi Creatorinnen auf Instagram“.

Muslimische Frauen, die sich modisch kleiden wollen, sind häufig mit der Annahme konfrontiert, dass religiöse Körperbedeckung der vestimentären Emanzipation, wie sie modischem Ausdruck inhärent sein soll, zuwiderlaufe.

In ihrem ethnographischen Forschungsprojekt zu muslimischen Modebildern in Deutschland untersucht Laura Haddad, wie Hijabi Creatorinnen dominante Diskurse durch Alltagswissen und mediatisierte Modellpraktiken aneignen und umdeuten. Dabei erweitert sie den Diskursbegriff um visuelle Elemente und dekonstruiert die Trennung zwischen Bild und Text.

Der Vortrag beleuchtet zudem, wie Hijabi Creatorinnen Selbstvermarktung und gesellschaftspolitisches Engagement mit einer situativen Subjektivierung diskursiver Anrufungen verbinden. Ihre modischen Repräsentationen werden als transitionale Wissensbestände sich wandelnder Modellpraktiken verstanden.

Am 24. Oktober 2026 findet zum zweiten Mal der Tag der pflegenden Eltern statt – initiiert vom Arbeitskreis pflegender Eltern von wir pflegen e.V. gemeinsam mit zahlreichen Unterstützer*innen. Unter dem Schwerpunkt „Bürokratie-Irrsinn stoppen“ macht der Aktionstag sichtbar, was pflegende Familien zusätzlich zur täglichen Pflege leisten: Anträge stellen, Nachweise beschaffen, Zuständigkeiten klären und Widersprüche schreiben. Diese Bürokratie kostet Zeit und Kraft. Macht mit, tragt zwei überkreuzte Pflaster und unterstützt die Kampagne unter #TagderpflegendenEltern.

Frank Riedel participates in the Gesundheitsökonomische Gespräche 2026, taking place at the University of Applied Sciences for Business and Society Ludwigshafen on October 23, 2026.
Under the theme Zukunft der Gesundheitsversorgung: Regional statt sektoral (The Future of Healthcare: Regional Rather Than Sectoral), the conference explores how regionally integrated healthcare structures can contribute to more patient-centered and economically efficient healthcare. During the event, Frank Riedel gives a talk on Zwischen Eigeninteresse und Versorgungsverpflichtung – Entscheidungsfindung aus spieltheoretischer Perspektive, examining decision-making between self-interest and healthcare obligations from a game-theoretic perspective.

Ein passendes und bezahlbares Zuhause ist deshalb ein wichtiger erster Schritt, um sich am neuen Studienort wohlzufühlen und gut anzukommen. Du kannst dabei helfen! Wir suchen Unterbringungsangebote für internationale Studierende und freuen uns über deine Unterstützung.

Welche Unterkünfte kannst du anbieten?

Ob vorübergehend oder für einen längeren Zeitraum, wir freuen uns über verschiedene Angebote:

Zimmer zur Untermiete: Du bist im Auslandssemester, machst ein Praktikum oder bist für eine Weile nicht vor Ort? Biete dein Zimmer internationalen Studierenden zur Untermiete an.
Freie Wohnungen: Du hast eine Wohnung, die du internationalen Studierenden zur Verfügung stellen möchtest?
Wohnraum von Vermieter*innen: Du kennst Vermieter*innen, die Zimmer oder Wohnungen an internationale Studierende vermieten möchten? Auch solche Angebote sind herzlich willkommen.

Jedes Angebot kann dazu beitragen, internationalen Studierenden die Ankunft und den Einstieg in ihr Studium zu erleichtern.

Housing from Landlords: Do you know any landlords who’d like to rent rooms or apartments to international students? We’d love to hear about those offers, too.
