Das Stadtarchiv Detmold lädt zum Praktikum ins Archiv ein!

Während dieses Praktikums können Sie Einblicke in die Tätigkeiten eines Stadtarchivs erhalten, lernen aber auch das Landesarchiv NRW kennen.

Zu den Aufgaben gehören unter anderem:

Übernahme, Sichtung und Ordnung von Schriftgut
Erschließung von Archivgut mithilfe moderner Archivsoftware
Durchführung von Recherchen im Archivbestand
Mitwirkung in historischer Bildungs- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, beispielsweise durch die Mitarbeit an Ausstellungen oder die Erstellung historischer Beiträge und Veröffentlichungen

Wir haben noch einen Pen and Paper Abend in diesem Sommersemester für euch parat! Er findet am Freitag den 31.07. um 17:00 Uhr statt. Eingeladen sind wie immer all, die Lust haben! Egal ob Anfänger*innen oder Fortgeschrittene.

Wie kann man sich anmelden? Schickt uns einfach eine E-Mail an: fachschaft-geschichte@uni-bielefeld.de

Die Anmeldefrist endet am Abend vorher, Donnerstag der 30.07. um 17:00 Uhr

Nachdem ihr euch angemeldet habt, bekommt ihr eine Mail von uns zurück. In dieser Mail ist ein Link zu einem Anmeldeformular, welches ihr ausfüllen müsst. Nur wenn ihr das Formular ausfüllt, können wir euch den One Shots zuteilen! In welchen Räumen wir spielen und bei welchen Abenteuern ihr mitspielen werdet, erfahrt ihr in einer Update E-Mail am Tag vor dem Event.

Pen and Paper, für diejenigen, die es nicht wissen, ist eine Mischung aus Brettspielen, interaktiven Rollenspielen und improvisiertem Theater, bei dem man gemeinsam eine Geschichte spielt und erzählt.

Our last Pen and Paper Event for this semester takes place on friday the 31.07. at 5 pm. We welcome everyone who wants to participate, beginners and advanced players.

To sign up for the event, write an e-mail to the following adress: fachschaft-geschichte@uni-bielefeld.de

The application closing date is the evening before the event takes place, the 30.07. at 5 pm.

After you signed up for the event, you will receive another e-mail from us. In that e-mail you will find a link to a survey which you have to fill out. We will send you an update e-mail the evening before the event with the information about where we will play.

For those who aren't familiar with Pen and Paper, the game is a mixture of board games, roleplaying and improvised theater. It's a way of collaborative storytelling.

(Counter-)Archive: Memorial Practices of the Soviet Underground by Klavdia Smola, Ilya Kukulin and Annelie Bachmaier (2024)

This volume offers the first comprehensive study of archival and memorial practices within Soviet unofficial culture. It examines how artists, writers, and intellectuals of the Soviet underground created alternative forms of preserving works, memories, and cultural networks that remained excluded from official Soviet institutions. In conditions where much of this culture was denied public visibility or legitimacy, archiving itself became both a creative practice and a form of resistance. Bringing together perspectives from archival theory and memory studies, the book explores how unofficial cultural actors collected, documented, and transmitted “nonexistent” art and literature across private apartments, personal collections, samizdat networks, photographs, recordings, and informal communities. At the same time, these practices were deeply connected to broader intellectual and artistic developments of the late twentieth century, despite the relative isolation of Soviet underground circles. The volume asks how Soviet unofficial culture constructed—and contested—social memory through the preservation of marginalized, censored, and tabooed cultural experiences. In doing so, it reveals the Soviet underground not only as a space of artistic dissent, but also as a distinctive counter-archive that shaped the cultural afterlives of the late Soviet period.

Developed from the intensive seminar "Commemorating Mass Violence: Memorial Sites in Germany, Israel, Rwanda and Ukraine," the Memories Remembered podcast series offers a critical and experiential exploration of collective memory. This podcast delves into memorials and monuments dedicated to history's gravest acts of mass violence, particularly the Holocaust of the Second World War, through the lens of specific course themes: human agency, historical sources and methods, and historical exhibition. Based on direct site visits to locations, each episode provides a profound reflection on how different generations choose to remember, how memorials are shaped, and a reflection on reconciliation and closure. Memories Remembered is an essential journey that bridges academic inquiry, personal experience, and the duty of remembrance.

Episode 1 Generational change and its effects on memory and atrocities: This episode features a cross-generational conversation on collective memory, focusing on the intergenerational transmission of the memory of mass atrocities, particularly the Holocaust. Rückblick auf die Open Space-Veranstaltung "Schlaglicht Praktikum" vom 11. Juni 2026

Bereits zum fünften Mal fand die vom Arbeitsbereich „Geschichte als Beruf” organisierte Open-Space-Veranstaltung „Schlaglicht Praktikum” statt. Am 11. Juni 2026 trafen interessierte Studierende der Geschichtswissenschaft und der Bild- und Kunstgeschichte auf Vertreter*innen regionaler und überregionaler Institutionen und Unternehmen. Die Anwesenden tauschten sich über Berufswege und mögliche Einsatzfelder für Praktikant*innen vor dem Hintergrund eines Geschichts- oder Bild- und Kunstgeschichtsstudiums aus. Dabei erfuhren die Studierenden von einem breiten Spektrum an Perspektiven, die das Studium eröffnen kann. Unter den Praxispartner:innen waren dieses Jahr Dana Bullock vom Museum Friedland, Dr. Christina Fehse vom Stadtarchiv Essen, Gerd Kurbjuhn von der VHS Bielefeld, Ralf Herbrich von der Denkmalpflege der Stadt Dortmund und Stella Pölkemann vom Transcript Verlag aus Bielefeld.

Die Konzeption der Veranstaltung sah vor, den Studierenden Einblicke in eine möglichst große Anzahl an Praktikums- und Berufsfeldern zu ermöglichen. Nach dem Grußwort des Dekans der Fakultät für Geschichtswissenschaft, Philosophie & Theologie, Prof. Dr. Lars Deile, und der Begrüßung aller Teilnehmenden durch Dr. Caroline Authaler und Lena Wagner vom Arbeitsbereich „Geschichte als Beruf” begaben sich die Studierenden direkt in die unterschiedlichen Räumlichkeiten, um mit den Praxispartner*innen ins Gespräch zu kommen. Das Open-Space-Format ermöglichte dann eine Rotation zwischen den verschiedenen Gesprächspartner*innen. Parallel dazu standen für individuelle Gespräche zur Gestaltung und Finanzierung von Praktika im nationalen und internationalen Raum auch Vertreter*innen des Teams von „Geschichte als Beruf” zur Verfügung. Nach offiziellem Ende der Gesprächsphasen nutzten zahlreiche Anwesende noch die Möglichkeit des informellen Austausches bei Kaffee und Keksen.

Wie in den letzten Jahren zeigte sich auch dieses Mal der Wert des Veranstaltungsformats für Studierende sowie für die Vertreter*innen der Praxis in zahlreichen positiven Rückmeldungen. Der Arbeitsbereich bedankt sich bei allen Anwesenden für die bereichernde Teilnahme und freut sich schon auf das nächste Mal, wenn es wieder heißt: „Fortsetzung folgt! Das 'Schlaglicht Praktikum' geht in die nächste Runde.“

auch in Bielefeld ist nun der Sommer ausgebrochen, zumindest wenn man auf das Wetter schaut.
Einige von euch haben bestimmt schon die Plakate auf den Fluren gesehen, denn das schönste Event des Jahres kehrt endlich zurück:

Wir freuen uns auf einen geselligen Abend und werden gemeinsam Volleyball und Wikingerschach spielen, dabei sommerlicher Musik lauschen und natürlich auch an einem leckeren Buffet schlemmen. We’re looking forward to a fun-filled evening where we’ll play volleyball and Viking chess together, listen to some summer music and, of course, tuck into a delicious buffet. This book series explores the relationship between the heritage and memory of war and conflict, contested heritage, competing memories in the past and the present. Since the publication of Dissonant Heritages and Memories in Contemporary Europe (2019) by Tuuli Lähdesmäki, Luisa Passerini, Sigrid Kaasik-Krogerus, Iris van Huis and Landscapes of Difficult Heritage (2020) by Gustav Wollentz, the theoretical aspects of difficult heritage have been regularly touched upon by authors of this series. Recently published Mario Panico Spaces for Nostalgia. Difficult Memories and Material Consolations (2024) and Daniel Palacios González, José María Durán Medraño Redefining Monuments. Materialist Memory Theories and Radical Heritage Practices (2025) theorize difficult heritage through the notion of nostalgia and the materiality. The memory and heritage of the ongoing war also became visible in the series. Maria Kurbak's Destructive Imagination. Male Fantasies and the Emotional Roots of Russia’s War in Ukraine (2026) discusses the role of emotional heritage and the lived experiences of Russian combatants. Svitlana Biedarieva's Ambicoloniality and War. The Ukrainian-Russian Case (2024) proposes new terminology for the description of the particular colonial relationship between Ukraine and Russia.

Solidarität mit Prof. Dr. Christina Brüning

Der Profilbereich Geschichtskulturen ist über die Morddrohungen und menschenfeindlichen Haltungen gegen die Marburger Geschichtsdidaktikerin Prof. Dr. Christina Brüning, die in der letzten Woche medial öffentlich wurden, tief erschüttert. Wir sprechen ihr unsere volle Solidarität aus und verurteilen einen solchen Angriff auf die Wissenschaftsfreiheit aufs Schärfste. Der von der Konferenz für Geschichtsdidaktik veröffentlichten Erklärung schließen wir uns an.

Appropriating History: The Soviet Past in Belarusian, Russian and Ukrainian Popular Culture (2024) by Matthias Schwartz and Nina Weller (eds.)

This edited volume explores how Belarusian, Russian, and Ukrainian popular culture reimagines and politicizes the Soviet past. Focusing on films, television series, literature, comics, and computer games, the contributors examine how popular media shape collective understandings of history and transform the memory of the twentieth century into narratives of identity, nostalgia, conflict, and power. The book demonstrates that references to the Soviet past are far from politically neutral. In contemporary popular culture, Soviet history can become a source of nostalgia and entertainment, but also a tool for nationalist mythmaking, neo-imperial imaginaries, and the legitimization of present-day political and military agendas. Through a series of case studies, the volume analyzes how cultural producers reinterpret historical events, heroes, and traumas for mass audiences in different post-Soviet contexts. By comparing Belarusian, Russian, and Ukrainian examples, the collection highlights both shared cultural legacies and increasingly divergent memory politics in Eastern Europe. It offers new perspectives on the complex relationship between popular culture, historical imagination, and political conflict in the region.

Im Juni ist es wieder so weit: Am Donnerstag, den 11.06., lädt die Veranstaltungsreihe „Schlaglicht Praktikum“ von 14 bis 16 Uhr zu ihrer fünften Ausgabe ein. Nachdem die bisherigen Open-Space-Formate bei den Studierenden auf große Resonanz gestoßen sind, bietet sich auch in diesem Semester erneut die Gelegenheit, direkt mit Vertreter:innen aus Institutionen und Unternehmen ins Gespräch zu kommen. In lockerer Atmosphäre und in abwechslungsreichen Gesprächsrunden erhalten Sie spannende Einblicke in die Planung und Durchführung von Praktika. Zahlreiche Praxispartner:innen aus der Region und darüber hinaus – darunter drei Absolvent:innen unserer Geschichtsabteilung – werden anwesend sein. "Wörter im Krieg" / "Dictionary of War" by Ostap Slyvynsky (2023)

Ostap Slyvynsky is a Ukrainian poet, translator, essayist, and literature professor. His book Wörter im Krieg gathers short testimonies, fragments of conversations, and memories from people living through Russia’s war against Ukraine. First written in 2022, the book has since been translated into several languages, allowing these voices to reach readers far beyond Ukraine. What makes Wörter im Krieg so powerful is its quiet intensity. The texts are often brief and restrained, yet they open up deeply personal experiences of fear, loss, displacement, care, and survival. Many of the stories seem almost timeless: rather than relying on visible markers of the twenty-first century, they show how war strips everyday life down to something raw and fundamental. Slyvynsky gathers these stories with great sensitivity to the way violence changes language itself. Words become fragile, unbearable, necessary, or newly charged with meaning. Wörter im Krieg is a difficult and deeply moving book, but also a profoundly humane one. It does not allow readers in Germany to imagine that they can fully understand the experience of war — but it asks them to listen carefully, attentively, and without turning away.

"Russian Cultural Policy in the Midst of War: Strategies and Actors" by Tatiana Romashko, Olga Zabalueva (2025)

This paper investigates developments in Russian cultural policy following the country’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It analyses shifts in cultural legislation and official discourse on culture within the context of war, using the cases of the Historical Parks Project and the Cultural Front of Russia. The authors argue that these projects exemplify both top-down and bottom-up dynamics of empowerment within the wartime patriotic framework. Despite differing leadership structures, they share significant similarities in their methods and ideological alignment with Russia’s authoritarian regime. The article draws on an analysis of official discourses in the Russian Parliament’s and Presidential Administration’s official Telegram channels and media coverage of their activities.

26.05. - 27.05.2026 Workshop: The Matter of Time. Time and Materiality in Historical Research

On 26 and 27 May, a second workshop with Wesleyan University will take place in Bielefeld. It focuses on how materiality and time are inextricably bound up in historical research processes. It also examines the way in which material objects generate, shape and convey historical time – and how temporal arguments often depend on unspoken assumptions about materiality. The workshop programme combines theoretical reflections on material resources with forms of temporal argumentation and recent material-oriented historiographical theories. The goal is to establish a shared analytical field that allows for new horizons in historical research and theory development.

27.05.2025 Koselleck-Lecture: Marnie Hughes-Warrington (Adelaide University) Artificial Historians Colluding

In her recent research, Marnie Hughes-Warrington (Adelaide University) focuses on AI-generated historiography. Her lecture looks at how algorithms collaborate to create historical narratives. Hughes-Warrington asks whether historiographical approaches – notably those of Robin George Collingwood, Thomas S. Kuhn and Reinhart Koselleck – do justice to the phenomenon of algorithm-induced historiographical collusion.
